Act I — Before the before
The decisions to make before you post anything
A strong audition starts long before the call goes live.
Before artists read the listing, before applications come in, before anyone books a train, flight, hotel, or day off work, your team has already made a series of decisions that shape the entire experience.
Some of those decisions are practical. How many artists are you hiring? What contract is available? How many people can you realistically see in one day?
Some are artistic. What kind of presence are you looking for? What does the work ask from the person entering it? Which skills are essential, and which qualities are open to discovery?
Some are structural. Will the first round be digital or in person? Is this an open call or an invited process? Will artists be seen individually, in groups, or through a combination of both?
These questions matter because artists build their decisions around the information you provide. When the process is clear, they can make informed choices. When it is unclear, they often apply anyway, travel anyway, prepare anyway, and carry the uncertainty into the room.
This act is about getting clear before you communicate.
Not to make the process heavier. To make everything that follows easier.
Clearer decisions inside your team lead to clearer calls, better aligned applications, calmer audition days, and a stronger chance of seeing the artists in front of you for who they actually are.
